Spring News

March into April has been a busy time for the hall as we ready ourselves for the summer season.

March began with a visit from ‘Your Moorlands Housing’ where a cheque was handed over to assist the hall in producing a newsletter and also to replenish its stock of cutlery.

Pictured is treasurer Sue Parry receiving the cheque from Kathryn Kent from Your Moorlands Housing.

As a result of the funding, towards the end month the local Guides group delivered around 400 newsletters in the Kingsley village area. Said chair Martyn Hordern ‘the newsletter has gone really well, the website and Facebook page have both had an upsurge of visits and we have achieved our aim of raising awareness of the hall and its facilities. You can download a copy of the newsletter off the website.

The committee was also busy spending a  Saturday morning doing a spring clean at the hall and outside. The local guides also took time to plant red Flanders poppies near to the flag pole in the hope that we will have a show of colour in August as we remember the start of the first world war.

In addition a colour banner has been purchased to advertise the hall’s availability for hire in an effort to increase use of this community facility.

March also saw the villages first Police Surgery held at the hall alongside the Post Office.

PCSO Adam Cliffe was on hand to answer questions and give advice out to resident. The next surgery will be 24th April between 1.30pm and 2.30pm.

Lastly the committee are busy putting the finishing touches to an Easter Saturday Breakfast event on 19th April when between 9am and midday you can get a cooked breakfast and enjoy a community atmosphere. There will be craft making for the children plus a free Easter egg with every child’s meal purchased.

The local Gardeners Association will be on hand to give out free seeds to the children to encourage them and their parents to enter the village show in August. Lastly Trish and Mike Byford will be present from Hazles Cross Farm Nursery where they have the national collection of Helebore’s. They will hopefully have some plants to sell but will certainly be able to tell you more about these plants and their collection.

Said secretary Sue Hordern ‘it promises to be a fun day – no washing up, things to do for the kids and the opportunity to come together with friends and neighbours’

Easter Breakfast – Update

As mentioned over the weekend we have now received the tickets for the breakfast and will be delivering to those that have pre ordered already.

If you want to come do pre order as it will ensure that the committee purchase the correct quantities of food etc to  ensure everyone who wants a breakfast gets one and nothing is wasted.

February News

The hall has had a busy few weeks and some good news as well.

St Werburgh’s Church held a Burn’s Night dinner on 25th January which saw the hall packed to capacity as the haggis was paraded and kilts were on display.

It was a fantastic night and one that showed the hall’s potential as a venue for an excellent night out.

The month has brought good news when the hall was awarded a grant from Your Moorlands Housing. The money will fund two newsletters that will be delivered across the village and available on the hall’s website to download. The newsletter will detail the hall’s facilities, regular events and a request for volunteers to join the committee.

The committee hope to have the newsletter delivered my mid to late March and are grateful to the local Guides and leader Jane McFarlane for their help.

In addition the money will also  be used to update the hall’s crockery and to that end the committee has been very fortunate that Cheadle Rotary Club have given them a bone china dinner service in return for an appropriate donation.

Said Chair Martyn Hordern ‘to get the grant was excellent news, it will fund two newsletters this year, something we have tried to do for some time, but to then be offered the dinner service was an extra bonus and we are very grateful to Bill Sherratt and Alan Chesters who made it happen’

The hall are hoping to put on an event on Easter Saturday – more details to follow when finalised.

Lastly the committee has complemented its website with a Facebook page – Kingsley Village Hall, which will provide the hall with another online presence.

Said Martyn ‘we have had over 30 ‘likes’ in less than a week and the page is providing an excellent place for us to advertise the hall and local events’

War Centenary Page Launched

A small committee is being formed to look at ways in marking the centenary of World War 1.

The next meeting is Tuesday 4th March 7pm in the village hall and all are welcome.

A page has been created on the village hall website with contact details and will expand to give detail of meetings and decisions taken until such time as a website is launched.

Village Hall now on Facebook

The village hall now has a presence on Facebook in an effort to reach as many potential users as possible.

Please visit and give us a ‘like’

It is our intention to ensure that both the website and Facebook are up to date and both will carry the same content albeit the Facebook page will have more daily information.

Click here for the Facebook page, alternatively when on Facebook search ‘Kingsley Village Hall’

The next stage will be for the hall to have a Twitter account.

Burns Night supper a great success

Saturday 25th January saw St Werburgh’s Church holding a Burn’s Night supper to raise funds for the Church.

Around 50 people attended and enjoyed a three course hot meal cooked in the hall, which included traditional Haggis.

There was plenty of tartan on display as well as a few kilts and of course the bagpipes.

Pictured are some of those enjoying the meal and the night’s entertainment.

Kingsley Village Hall Celebrates 100 years of Community Use

The week commencing 13th January 2014 saw an historic moment commemorated in the history of the village hall.

Initially built as the result of a sum of money bequeathed from the Beech family in 1913 as a Reading Room the halls first meeting took place this week in 1914.

That first meeting saw Lt Col Beech elected as President whilst other posts were also filled and a decision made to have the official opening of the hall on 31st January 1914.

The opening of the hall was to be performed by Miss Beech with refreshments provided after, along with an evening ‘social’. In addition a silver presentation key to perform the opening was to be purchased.

This week saw the hall’s current committee members meeting to commemorate the anniversary of that first ever meeting.

Said Chair Martyn Hordern ‘ we are fortunate to have that first meeting recorded in the original meeting book and wanted to celebrate a hundred years of an active committee meeting and  running the hall’

He added ‘we will be commemorating the hall’s centenary of use over the year and looking forward to the hall’s continued use’

As now there was an active involvement in the halls affairs by St Werburgh’s Church with the Rev Mayne one of the original trustees.

2014 will also see the village commemorating the start of the 1914-18 war. Two of the original trustees Lt Col Beech and William Aubrey Bowers died whilst on war service or as the result of wounds received. Both are commemorated on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission website.

The hall is available to hire throughout the year for all manner of events and already holds a twice weekly mobile Post Office, weekly Guides group, a Mothers and Toddlers group, plus Yoga and Slimming World sessions.

Anyone interested in hiring the hall at very competitive rates are asked to contact the committee via this website.

In addition the committee is always looking out for new members with time to give to assist in the running of the hall, no matter how small. If interested please email the secretary on sue@kingsleyvillagehall.org.uk

Christmas Lights Event

Friday 22nd November saw the hall’s first ever Christmas Tree light ceremony and also the launch of the villages first ever Community Calendar.

The lights event started at 7pm when the Christmas tree lights were switched on.

The event was opened by Reverend Carole Richardson  from St Werburgh’s church and there was carol singing by the local Guides.

There was then refreshments  and gifts for sale  in the hall.

At the same event the community calendar will be launched.

This is a joint project between the hall and St Werburgh’s Church.

Priced at £5 they are a great stocking filler and will provide much needed funds for both organisations.

Use of hall for renewal of vows celebration

May saw a family celebration held at the hall following a couple’s renewal of their vows at St. Werburgh’s church.

The weather was fantastic and the hall was set out extremely well.

A pictures showing how the hall looked is shown here and is a good representation of how the hall can be made to look for any event.
