Incident in Village requiring use of Defibrillator at the hall

On Friday night a lady was taken ill on The Green.  Local residents assisted (and they should be commended for their efforts) and the ambulance was called. It was felt that the defibrillator at the village hall would assist and the ambulance service was asked by more than one person for the code to access the device.

For reasons that are unclear at this time the code was not forthcoming and due to the delay, the only option was for the door to be prised open to gain access to the device.

By this time the ambulance had arrived.

The device is housed in the cabinet for two reasons, one to keep it at a temperature that allows it to work in all seasons (it has a heater) and sadly due to the times we live in, to keep it safe and available.

When the ambulance is called they should be in a position to give out the code to gain access. They own the device and the cabinet is to their specifications.

Clearly, there is concern over ready access,  in an attempt to alleviate these concerns the code for the device will be supplied to the landlord at the Bulls Head. A poster sited by the device will advise of this.

In the days to come, we will write to nearby residents to ask if they are willing to have the code at hand and for their house number or name to be supplied on the poster at the hall so that in the event of a delay there is a more ready access than was the case on Friday night.

This does not negate the need to call 999 which is paramount as not every heart attack can be dealt with by a defibrillator and of course there are many other medical emergencies.

If anyone living near to the hall wishes to volunteer their house number and to have the code please don’t wait for the letter, do get in touch either via Facebook or by contacting the Hall via the form below.

The ambulance service has been written to and asked for an explanation and this will be shared when received.

Lastly, when the devices were installed over two years ago around 50 people volunteered to be trained in basic lifesaving skills. This is a very small proportion of the local population. If there is a need then the hall will arrange additional training, either to refresh those who have had training previously or to those who have never been trained.

Wakes Fun Day a Great Success

Last Saturday saw the realisation of almost 12 months planning and preparation as the hall hosted a mini ‘wakes’ fun day in scorching temperatures under a cloudless sky.

With funding from the Big Lottery, the aim to bring together the wider community of all ages was achieved throughout the day.

Thanks to the weather the outside activities were very popular with a BBQ, Quotes and a coconut shy. Kingsley Kingfisher staff were on hand to facepaint anyone who wanted a design and there were a number of stalls and competitions.

The Royal British Legion had two stalls one being a tombola stall ran by Allison Held from Kingsley Holt who is cycling from London to Paris later this year to raise funds for the Legion. Alsion was delighted to have raised over £100 on the day and thanks everyone for their support.

Should anyone want to support her, then go to her just giving page HERE

There was also a Breast Cancer Research stall selling ‘Claires Accessories.

In the hall, we had a range of alternative therapists with the reflexology being very popular. Lastly, we had the Sew Sister’s selling handmade gifts and goods.

We were delighted to have the children from St. Werburgh’s dancing before a very enthusiastic crowd and earlier in the day we have the Bhangra Blaze ladies doing a demonstration.

Late afternoon saw a very well-attended afternoon tea with cakes and scones baked in the village and freshly made sandwiches washed down with tea in china cups.

There was just time to tidy up and set the hall out for the Stone Cold Sober..ish concert. Disappointingly the concert hadn’t grabbed the imagination of those in the village and there were a few empty seats. However, those who weren’t present missed a real treat of a night of musical entertainment on the most perfect of summers nights.

Said Martyn Hordern chair of the committee ‘we were lucky to have such a beautiful day. We had to stock up on more ice creams due to the fantastic weather’, he added ‘we anticipate that over 200 people attended the event and we would like to thank everyone who attended and made it such a great day in the village’

The committee would like to thank those in the village who volunteered to help, be it baking delicious cakes, helping to prepare the outside of the hall in the weeks leading up to the event or setting up and helping on the day.

We would also like to thanks Graham Coates who took most  of the pictures on the day.

The question is whether there is sufficient support to run another event? The committee cannot do it alone and would need more help than we had this time to build on the good start we have had.

Comments are left open on this post, so feel free to have your say!

Bhangra Blaze at the Wakes

We are delighted at how the wakes went on Saturday and we do hope everyone enjoyed themselves.

Remember that whilst you were indirectly supporting the hall you were actually supporting your community.

Later this week we will post some great pictures taken by Graham Coates as well as detailing the day’s events.

However, firstly we want to promote the next two Bhangra Blaze classes at the hall. They are on 30th June and 14th July at 7.30pm.

Cost is £5 and it’s a great workout. They performed a short demonstration on Saturday just after 12 noon as they had to do another one in Cromford which was a shame as many of you will have missed it.

From talking to people it’s clear many are interested but not sure if it’s for them being concerned it’s too strenuous. The fact of the matter is you make it as intensive as you wish.

To attend either session contact Janine on 07769565012.

Here is a very short video to give you an idea. This is how it is – just you and some music!

Wakes 2017 Update

The organising committee is more or less sorted and hope to publish the full day’s programme next week once everything is in place.
Remember that entry is FREE – the bouncy castle, coconut shy and quoits are FREE – there is also face and nail painting as well as stalls in the hall including alternative therapy and Angel Card reading.
The BBQ see’s beef burgers and hot dogs for £1 plus teas and coffees as well as pop etc.
Our afternoon tea from 3pm to 5pm is just £2.50 and includes homemade scones, cakes and cake !
Stone Cold Sober..ish perform for us in the evening with doors open from 6.30pm. Tickets are just £4 and include a FREE drink on production of your ticket. There is a licensed bar so it’s not a cup of tea or glass of pop (unless that’s what you prefer)!
Sounds great, however, ticket sales for the tea and concert are less than we anticipated and we don’t quite understand why that would be when they are such great value.
The tea will be by ticket only – we cannot justify buying food to throw away just in case people turn up, the concert ideally won’t see justify buying food to throw away just in case people turn up, the concert ideally won’t see entry on the night without a ticket and of course we have a seating capacity so no ticket might mean no entry as we are full.
So there you have it – if you want to guarantee an afternoon tea – book your ticket, same to ensure you have a seat at the concert.
To get your ticket call Martyn on 750657 or message the page, it’s as simple as that.

Wakes Tickets a Slow Burner

With just a month to go to the Hall’s wakes / community event, the committee is busy putting the final touches and preparing for the day’s events.

The afternoon’s fun in and around the hall is pretty well sorted – there is free entry and the bouncy castle and entertainments are free along the with face and nail painting plus a craft demonstration. As well as that there is a BBQ and refreshments with stalls in the hall selling a rage of goods.

However, the Afternoon Tea and evening concert with Stone Cold Soberi.ish have seen a disappointing level of interest given the excellent value the ticket prices represent.

It’s being pleasing to see some tickets purchased by people who haven’t supported an event at the hall in the recent past but we still have a way to go to sell the concert out and are short of what we anticipated the interest in the tea would be.

We are sure the day’s events from start to finish will be a lot of fun and look forward to seeing as many people as possible join us on the day. A great deal of hard work has gone into the event over several months and as previously stated this is about getting the community together and not raising money for the hall.

If you want any tickets they can be ordered via the wakes page on this site HERE, via the Facebook page or by calling Martyn on 750657.

Just Seed bring a bit of colour to Kingsley

A number of years ago the village secured funding to place a number of planter barrels throughout the village.

Many are currently maintained by residents who live nearby to the barrels which provide a splash of colour throughout the year.

The hall hopes in the coming months to see if it’s possible to secure funding to replace those barrels that are past their best.

However, in the meantime thanks to Nick and the team at Just Seed in Wrexham (www.justseed.com) each barrel ‘carer’ will be given a mix of seeds for this year.

We are in the process of packaging the seeds up and will then deliver them across the village in the coming days.

A couple of the barrels have not yet been adopted – one on Froghall Bank at the junction with Banks Lane and one on Holt Lane at the junction with Haste Hill Avenue – if you want to help out please do let us know.

Just Seed have also supplied seeds to enable sections of the recreation ground that are being left uncut this year to be planted with a variety of wildflowers.

Easter Breakfast – the best one yet

The hall’s committee would like to thank everyone that came to the breakfast on Saturday 15th April.

It was by far the best one we have done at Easter so far – so nice to see the children with their Easter eggs and a hall full of people.

Nice also, to see old friends and great to make new ones. All in all, we did just short of 70 breakfasts and have raised over £200 towards the upkeep of the hall.

As always we will spend the money wisely improving the building and looking at ways to make these events even better.

Lastly, many happy returns to Steve from Kingsley Holt who had a full English followed by cake and a chorus of Happy Birthday.

Next Sunday see’s the World War One project launching its book – fingers crossed there is a big splash in the Stunner on Wednesday and we look forward to another hall full of people.

Until then, enjoy the rest of your Easter weekend

Councillors Fund Hall

Churnet Ward District Councillors Elsie Fallows and Ivor Lucas have each donated £100 from their Community Initiative Fund to Kingsley Village Hall.

Councillor Fallows’ donation has been used to purchase new tablecloths to place on recently sourced banquet tables and will be used in a forthcoming wedding reception, the first held in many years at the hall if not ever.

Councillor Lucas’s donation has been used to purchase a commercial grade toaster and has come at a very opportune moment as the hall’s annual Easter Saturday breakfast event is to be held on Saturday 15th April between 9am and 12 noon.

Said Chair of the Trustees  Martyn Hordern ‘ we are delighted and very grateful that Elsie and Ivor have been able to assist us’ he added  ‘the money will be put to good use and will enhance the hall’s facilities and capability’

The Easter breakfast has fast become a fixture in the village with volunteers doing the cooking and washing up whilst the community has a great breakfast and meets up with old friends and makes new one in the heart of the village.

This year a children’s breakfast includes an Easter gift and costs £3.50. An adult’s breakfast costs £3.50 if purchased in advance which is recommended as it helps the hall to cater properly.

To get tickets for the event visit the event page on this web site, or contact Martyn Hordern on 01538 750657.
